About this filter

Death Stranding Director's Cut is a story-heavy, cutscene-dense single-player game from Kojima Productions, and its English script does not shy away from strong language. Across gameplay barks, radio chatter, and long cinematic conversations, the dialogue reaches for the harshest sexual swears, religious profanity, and crude slang when characters are under pressure. For a player who wants to follow this dense, slow-burn narrative without those specific words landing in their ears or on screen, there has not been a clean option that leaves the rest of the experience intact. This free filter is built for exactly that audience: people who already own the game, want to keep playing the game they bought, and simply want the strongest profanity taken out of the English voice-over and English subtitles.

The filter works on two surfaces. In the English voice-over it silences 424 spoken lines — both gameplay barks and cutscene dialogue — using a word-level mute: only the flagged word goes quiet, the rest of the line and the actor's delivery play normally, and every clip keeps its original length so timing and lip-sync are untouched. In the English on-screen text it masks 597 entries across 108 dialogue files — subtitles, emails, interviews, the codex, and menu strings — with same-length asterisks, so layout and line length never shift. The targeted categories are the strongest sexual expletives, religious profanity, and a small set of crude insults; full words are masked rather than hinted at, with no first-letter giveaways.

The patch was built by exporting the game's own English text and audio, applying a reviewed wordlist and a set of context rules, then writing the results back into the game's native Decima archives. Context rules keep legitimate in-world terms intact, so the faction name "Homo Demens" and the lore phrase "particle of God" are deliberately left alone. Every edit was verified two ways: each muted line measures as silent across its masked span with the surrounding audio preserved, and each changed file was content-hash checked against the rebuilt install, with an operator playing through both gameplay and cutscene scenes to confirm nothing crashed or broke. The scope is deliberately narrow and English-only. The story, the voice performances, the music and sound effects, all gameplay, every non-English language, and your saves, trophies, and settings are left exactly as they were. The mod ships as a self-applier that carries no game files — it edits the copy you already own on your own machine, and a built-in restore returns everything to original.

What Was Changed

  • English voice-over: 424 spoken lines (gameplay barks and cutscene dialogue) have the flagged words silenced. The mute is word-level — only the flagged word goes quiet; the rest of the line and the performance play normally, and each clip keeps its original length, so timing and lip-sync are unchanged.
  • English on-screen text: 597 entries across 108 dialogue files have the flagged words masked with same-length asterisks — subtitles, emails, interviews, the codex, and menu strings. Layout and length are unchanged.

What Was NOT Changed

The story, voice performances, music, sound effects, and gameplay are exactly as Kojima Productions made them — only the flagged English words change. Non-English text and audio are left alone, and saves, trophies, and settings are not modified. A few in-world terms that look flagged but aren't — the faction name "Homo Demens" and the lore phrase "particle of God" — are intentionally left in place.
