About this filter

Far Cry 5 is Ubisoft's 2018 open-world shooter set in the fictional Hope County, Montana, where a doomsday cult's takeover drives a story told through heavily voiced English dialogue, radio chatter, and combat barks. The script leans on strong language and frequent vain religious exclamations, which means even with the in-game subtitle toggle the spoken lines still carry the words families and streamers often want to avoid. This filter is for players who want to keep the game's tense, story-rich experience while removing that strong language from what they hear and read. It covers the English voice-over and English on-screen text only; if you play the game in another language, this filter does not change anything for you.

The patch works on two surfaces. In the English voice-over, 11,514 spoken clips have the flagged words silenced at the word level — only the flagged word goes quiet, while the rest of the line and the actor's performance play normally, and every clip keeps its original length so timing and lip-sync stay intact. In the English on-screen text, 2,738 entries (2,602 subtitle lines plus 136 menu and mission-note strings) have the flagged words masked with asterisks. The words affected fall into the strong-language and crude-anatomical categories along with vain or exclamatory uses of religious terms; genuine scriptural and in-world religious uses, place names, and character names are deliberately left untouched. Both the game's base and patch string tables are filtered, so the masking shows whichever copy the game loads.

The filter was built and tested against the current Steam release of Far Cry 5 (Dunia engine, FAT2 archive version 10) on Windows 11. Each surface was verified with measured checks: edited subtitle entries were confirmed to display asterisks, and sampled muted audio spans were confirmed to decode to silence with no leakage at the word boundaries. The English voice-over coverage was assembled from a full transcription pass over the game's spoken clips, with edge-of-word timing tightened so first and last flagged words mute cleanly. A frozen copy of the installer was run against a fresh, unmodified install and reproduced the exact same result every time, and an in-game playthrough confirmed the masked text and silenced lines work as intended. The story, voice performances, music, sound effects, gameplay, non-English content, and your save files are all left exactly as Ubisoft shipped them. The tool only ever changes the English audio and text files described above, backs up your originals before it touches anything, and can restore them on request. A small number of short combat barks may slip through where automatic transcription misheard the line; this known gap is disclosed openly rather than hidden.

What Was Changed

  • English voice-over: 11,514 spoken clips have the flagged words silenced. The mute is word-level — only the flagged word goes quiet; the rest of the line and the performance play normally. Each clip keeps its original length, so timing and lip-sync are unchanged.
  • English on-screen text: 2,738 entries (2,602 subtitle lines + 136 menu and mission-note strings) have the flagged words masked with asterisks. Both the base and patch string tables are filtered, so the words are gone whichever one the game loads.

What Was NOT Changed

Non-English text and audio are left exactly as Ubisoft shipped them — the filter is English-only. The story, voice performances, music, sound effects, and gameplay are unchanged; only the flagged English words change. Your saves, progress, and game settings are not touched. Words used in a genuine religious or scriptural sense (sermons, the cult's in-world scripture, place and character names) are left alone — only the vain and exclamatory uses are filtered.
