About this filter

System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster is Nightdive's rebuild of the Looking Glass and Irrational survival-horror classic, running the original Dark Engine resource model inside Nightdive's modern KEX runtime. It is a story-driven game told largely through what you read and hear: PDA logs, emails, menu text, and spoken-dialogue subtitles carry the plot, while voice-log recordings scattered across the derelict starship Von Braun do a lot of the storytelling out loud. That heavy reliance on written and spoken language means a handful of strong words surface in places a player can't easily skip. This filter is for anyone who wants the full atmosphere and tension of the remaster without that language: players who stream, play with family nearby, or simply prefer a cleaner read. The text covered is English only; non-English locales are left exactly as shipped.

This filter works across both the words you read and the words you hear. On the text side it replaces 146 English instances across menus, spoken-dialogue subtitles, and PDA logs and emails: the F-word, S-word, B-word, A-word, D-word, and religious oaths are masked with same-length asterisks, so a flagged term simply reads as **** in place. Those edits live in the KEX localization file for menus and subtitles and in the classic Dark-engine string tables for the PDA logs and emails. On the audio side, 31 English voice-log clips are muted over 38 individual spoken word spans: only the exact word span is replaced with matching-duration digital silence, leaving the rest of each performance — its tone, timing, and pacing — fully intact. The clips keep their original IMA ADPCM codec, 22050 Hz sample rate, and length, so nothing else about how a log sounds is altered.

The filter is built and delivered as a KPF mod overlay that loads at the game's highest priority, so the original archives are never altered in place. When you run the included applier it re-creates the edits from your own installed game files — nothing copyrighted is downloaded or shipped — and backs up your originals automatically before writing anything, with a Restore option to put them back. Every count above was measured against the verified GOG build (game executable 1.3.4984.0), and the finished filter was confirmed in-game on the actual install: censored text was seen rendering in menus, subtitles, and PDA logs, and a muted voice line was heard playing silent over the flagged word, with both the text and audio surfaces affirmed end to end. Left untouched are the story, the voice performances, the music, the gameplay, your saves and achievements, GOG Galaxy integration, and all non-English text and audio. You must own a legitimate copy of the game; GameScrubber distributes no game files.

A manual drop-in download (pre-modified game files you copy into place yourself) is also available as an alternate download on the same NexusMods page, for players who prefer not to run the installer app.

What Was Changed

  • 146 English text instances across menus, spoken-dialogue subtitles, and PDA logs/emails: the F-word, S-word, B-word, A-word, D-word, and religious oaths are replaced with same-length asterisks. Covers menus and spoken-dialogue subtitles (loc_english.txt) plus PDA logs and emails (Dark-engine .str string tables).
  • 31 English voice-log clips muted over 38 individual spoken word spans: only the exact word span is replaced with matching-duration digital silence. The rest of each performance — tone, timing, pacing — is preserved. IMA ADPCM codec, 22050 Hz sample rate, and clip duration are unchanged.

What Was NOT Changed

The story, voice performances, music, and gameplay are exactly as Nightdive shipped them — only the flagged English words change. Non-English text and audio are untouched. Cutscene and intro video audio are unmodified (no profanity detected). Multiplayer behavior is untested; use in single-player only. Saves, achievements, and GOG Galaxy integration are unaffected.
